Spring Tea tickets available April 20!

One of the library’s most-anticipated events returns to Thistle Cottage next month.
The 2026 Spring Tea is on the books for May 9.
Library director Janet Harris said this event is one of the library’s most popular and successful. A limited number of seats are available, and the event sells out more quickly each year.
“Last year, we sold out in 4 minutes!” she said. “We didn’t expect it to go that quickly, but people get really excited about the tea.”
Thistle Cottage staff member Amie Waltrip said the library is obviously proud of the event’s success, but they also understand the frustration of people who aren’t able to get tickets. Because of that, staff is planning to do ticket sales a little differently this year to try to prevent the mad dash the staff saw last
year when tickets went on sale. “We’re going to release tickets in batches,” Waltrip said, “so if you can’t get here in person and can’t get to a phone or computer right at the instant registration opens, you’ll still have a shot at getting tickets later.
“We’ve gone back and forth about the best way to do it, but we really hope this works out better for everyone,” she added.
Ticket sales begin Monday, April 20 at 9 a.m., Waltrip said, but a small number of available seats will be held back to be released later in the day. Those tickets will become available at 1:30 p.m.
“You’ll essentially have two chances to get your tickets,” Waltrip explained. “If you don’t get through quickly enough in the morning, you can try again in the afternoon.
“We really just want to be as fair as possible and give everyone a chance.”
Tickets are $17.50 each, which helps to offset the cost of the food and tea provided for each guest, Harris said. She added that the best way to be assured of getting tickets is to purchase in person at Thistle Cottage, but tickets may also be purchased through the library’s online event calendar (http://mcplib.org/events) or by phone at 270-338-4760.
Library staff warned that each batch of tickets may still sell out quickly, so anyone interested in attending should make plans to stop by, call or register online as soon as possible.
The Spring Tea is one of the ways the library tries to provide unique events to Muhlenberg County residents, library staff said. Harris said, “We’re fortunate to have Thistle Cottage, which is just the perfect place for an event like this, and we try to put together something that feels special and that everyone can really enjoy.”
The Spring Tea includes several small bites, both savory and sweet, as well as a variety of teas for guests to try. The exact menu changes from year to year, but the planning staff makes sure to provide several choices, including both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items and at least one caffeine-free tea
option. “We can’t guarantee to meet all dietary restrictions and preferences, due to the nature of the event,” Waltrip explained, “but we do try to make sure there’s something there for everyone.”
Water and punch or lemonade are also available for guests who have had their fill of tea.
The menu typically includes items such as finger sandwiches, quiche, scones, tea cakes and more, while the teas provided range from basic black teas to more exotic herbal blends.
Staff said they are inspired by a different theme each year when planning the menu and decorations.
This year’s event is loosely inspired by the Regency/Georgian era. “Think Bridgerton and Jane Austen,” Waltrip said. “That’s the vibe we had in mind when we were planning.”
The Spring Tea also includes a contest for the best hat. While not required, guests are encouraged to
dress up and wear their favorite headpiece. A secret panel of judges observes the hats during the event, and the winner takes home a prize.
Traditional hats, bonnets, fascinators and headbands are all considered.
The 2026 Spring Tea will be held May 9 at 2 p.m. at Thistle Cottage. (122 South Cherry Street in Greenville). For more information about the annual Spring Tea, contact Thistle Cottage at 270-338-4760.
