Muhlenberg County Public Libraries is proud to name Jacob Sharma and Tanner, Aubrey, Abigail and Ethan Dumont as Kid Librarians for April 2026.
Kid Librarians are chosen monthly to design a juvenile display at the library. Each Kid Librarian may choose a theme for their display, select library materials to highlight and decide how to organize and best show off the chosen titles. New Kid Librarians are selected each month for each library branch (Harbin Memorial and Central City).
Chosen Kid Librarians are acknowledged inside the library with a sign next to their display, as well as being recognized in the local newspapers and on the library’s website and social media accounts.
Central City’s Kid Librarian for April 2026 is Jacob Sharma. Sharma, 11, is in fifth grade. He enjoys social studies at school – “I like learning about events and geography,” he said. When it comes to reading, however, Sharma likes science fiction best. His favorite book is The First State of Being by Erin Estrada Kelly, which features time travel as a key plot element. Sharma said, “I like that this book shows two worlds. One is far in the future, the other is in the 1990s.
“I appreciate the funny jokes in all of this author’s books,” he added.
In addition to reading and learning about social studies, Sharma also plays the piano.
Sharma said he hasn’t quite decided yet what he wants to be when he grows up, but he has several ideas, including but not limited to President of the United States, astronaut or architect. No matter what job he chooses, however, he wants to be helpful to others. To that end, he has volunteered at the library for the past two years for Junior Beta Club, cleaning and straightening the children’s area and helping to organize supplies.
His display for the month was also carefully organized; each row had a different theme. Row one includes some of his favorite award winners, row 2 is dedicated to women’s history topics and row 3 is for humor.
Harbin Memorial has more than one Kid Librarian for April; in fact, a whole group of siblings participated! The Dumont siblings – Tanner, 8; Aubrey, 10; Abigail, 12; and Ethan, 13 – are this month’s Kid Librarians at Greenville.
Tanner Dumont is in second grade. Like Sharma, Tanner is a fan of social studies when it comes to school work. “[I] especially like to learn about different cultures,” he said. Tanner’s favorite book is Dog Man by Dav Pilkey because he enjoys the action, but when it comes to books, Tanner likes a little bit of everything, both fiction and non-fiction. That’s one of the reasons he appreciates the library. “It has a ton of books for me to choose from,” he said. He added, “And it has fun stuff to do like the LEGO club!” When he’s not reading, Tanner enjoys hockey, especially playing street hockey, and he works hard to be a good friend. In the future, he wants to work at Wal-Mart.
Aubrey Dumont is in fourth grade, and like her brother, she enjoys social studies. She also likes that the library has a big selection to choose from. “There is a good variety,” Aubrey said, though she prefers fiction. “I just started reading chapter books, and I love them!” The first chapter book she read was Good Dog, but her favorite is Restart by Gordon Korman. She explained, “It keeps you interested. It reveals secrets.” In her free time, Aubrey enjoys dancing and singing, and when she grows up, she’s interested in turning those pastimes into a career. She said she’d like to be a ballet dancer, a singer, or a babysitter.
Abigail is the next oldest Dumont sibling; she is in sixth grade. Unlike her younger siblings, however, she particularly enjoys studying math. She’s also interested in animal science, and she wants to be a vet tech when grows up. “I’m good with animals,” she said. In fact, her favorite books are the Wild Rescuers series by StacyPlays. Abigail’s favorite genre is fantasy, which encompasses both the Wild Rescuers series and the books written by her favorite author, J.K. Rowling. She likes to visit the library both for the books and for the activities, like LEGO club. “I think it’s pretty big and has lots of books to choose from,” she said. “I like the clubs, too … I like LEGOs.” Abigail also collects Squishmallows.
Ethan is the final Dumont sibling participating as one of this month’s Kid Librarians. He is in eighth grade, and like Abigail, he enjoys studying math. Ethan’s favorite book genre is fiction, especially Richard Paul Evans’s Michael Vey series, because it is “full of action,” he said. He appreciates that the library has many other options available too, though. He said, “There are lots of books to choose from.” He also enjoys the various activities and events hosted by the library. Ethan’s other hobbies include learning to play piano. Also, he said, “I am very good at card tricks.” Ethan plans to be an electrical lineman when he grows up.
The Dumonts’ display reflects all of their interests; they included some of their favorite titles as well as books about LEGOs and some social studies topics.
Kid Librarian displays are available at their respective library branches each month. They are removed the following month to make space for the next set of chosen Kid Librarians.
New Kid Librarians are chosen for each library branch early each month.
The Kid Librarian program is designed for children and teens in third through eighth grade, though applications are accepted from all kids and teens in a similar age range. Applications are available at the front desk of each library branch.
For more information about the Kid Librarian program, contact Muhlenberg County Public Libraries at 270-338-4760 or stop by to fill out an application.
