Summer Reading is back, and Muhlenberg County Public Libraries is getting ready for a “whale” of a good time at their Oceans of Possibilities program in June!
Summer Reading registration begins May 23, and the program officially begins June 6.

Summer Reading is a way to keep people’s minds engaged and active even during the summer months, when school isn’t in session, library director Janet Harris explained. Participants of all ages are encouraged to read as much as possible during the length of the program, in order to avoid losing any of the progress made during the previous several months.
Summer Reading participants keep track of how much they read during the summer, using either paper reading logs or online software called ReaderZone. Each age group has a different reading goal, ranging from 90 minutes per week for the youngest participants to simply reading as much as possible for adults.
However, Summer Reading involves more than just reading, although that is still the core goal. Typically, the library also hosts fun themed events throughout the program. While COVID put a halt to that for the past couple of years, the library is excited to return to in-person programming this summer.
The library will be hosting weekly activities for children and teens during their month-long Summer Reading Program at the following days and times:
• Pre-K – 10 a.m. on Mondays (at Harbin Memorial) and Thursdays (at Central City)
• K-2nd grade – 1 p.m. on Mondays (at Harbin Memorial) and Thursdays (at Central City)
• 3rd-5th grade – 10 a.m. on Tuesdays (at Harbin Memorial) and Fridays (at Central City)
• Teens (6th-12th grade) – 3 p.m. on Mondays (at Central City) and Tuesdays (at Harbin Memorial)
Adults will have the opportunity to participate in weekly prize drawings and other challenges throughout the month of June. A craft program to create a miniature beach scene display will also be held at the Central City library on June 1 and again at Harbin Memorial in Greenville on June 15. Space is limited, so prospective attendees must register by phone or in person at the library as early as possible to participate in this craft program.
These programs are all optional, and participants can choose which day/location they will attend.
For children and teens, the library is also providing an SRP@Home option. Any child or teen who cannot attend programs in person can sign up to receive weekly take-home activity kits instead. These kits will include materials and supplies for activities similar to those performed during in-person programs and will be available to registered participants only at either library branch during regular business hours or on Wednesdays at Muhlenberg South Elementary School from 3 to 4 p.m.
Participants will be asked to choose their pick-up location at registration.
Registrants may not sign up for both in-person programs and take-home kits; they must choose a method of participation while filling out the registration form.
Registration begins Monday, May 23, and participants can begin tracking their reading as soon as they sign up. An online sign-up form is available, or readers can sign up in person at either library.
In-person programs and SRP@Home kit giveaways begin June 6 and run through July 1. Reading logs will also be due by July 1.

Hello. I signed my child up for summer reading but I’m unsure if it was for in person or pick up. I want it to be “pick up” if that’s possible. If someone can get back to me about this I’d be grateful. Thank you! 💚

Reader Zone- I’m trying to join the correct group to keep track of my daughters reading but it says I need a reading code. (We picked up her SRP@home kit today but did not get a code.)
