Spring Victorian Tea set for May 11

It’s spring, and that means it’s time to mark your calendars for the annual Spring Victorian Tea at Thistle Cottage!

This year’s tea will be held May 11, 2019 at 1 p.m.

Tickets for the tea go on sale Monday, April 22. Tickets can be reserved for $12.50 each, which helps pay for the cost of the food served at the party. A limited number of seats are available for the tea.

Library staff warned that tickets usually sell out quickly, so anyone interested in attending the tea should purchase tickets as soon as possible.

Muhlenberg County Public Libraries hosts the annual tea as a way to provide a different experience for Muhlenberg County residents. “This is something out of the ordinary,” library director Janet Harris explained. “We wanted to give people the chance to experience something here at home that they don’t get every day.”

The tea includes entertainment, decorations and a menu of light snacks that complement the theme, which changes yearly. This year’s theme is the Kentucky Derby. Thistle Cottage, the elegant 1912 home that houses the event, will be decorated for the occasion, and the menu will include Derby-appropriate snacks as well as basic tea party standards. Thistle Cottage’s Amie Waltrip said, “We try to find menu items that will be appealing to everyone, while still fitting the occasion.

“We work hard to plan a unique menu that everyone can enjoy.”

The event includes a variety of tea options for everyone to try, Harris and Waltrip said, including flavored and non-caffeinated choices as well as the more common basic black teas. There are usually at least five different teas available, and attendees can try as many of those as they like. Water and lemonade are also available for guests that don’t want to drink tea.

In addition to the food and entertainment, the Spring Victorian tea features a hat contest. There is no dress code for the event, but attendees are encouraged to dress in their Derby finest and wear their best hat in hopes of winning a prize.

Tea tickets can be purchased starting Monday morning at Thistle Cottage. For more information about the Spring Victorian Tea, call Muhlenberg County Public Libraries at 270-338-4760.
