Muhlenberg County Public Libraries is proud to announce Kid Librarian selections for October are Olivia Fox and Rowan Call.
Kid Librarians are chosen monthly to design a juvenile display at the library. Each Kid Librarian may choose a theme for their display, select library materials to highlight and decide how to organize and best show off the chosen titles. Two new Kid Librarians are selected each month, one at each library branch (Harbin Memorial and Central City).
Chosen Kid Librarians are acknowledged inside the library with a sign next to their display, as well as being recognized in the local newspapers and on the library’s website and social media accounts.
Central City’s Kid Librarian for October 2024 is Olivia Fox. Fox is 12 years old and in seventh grade. She enjoys reading, especially romance, and named Jenny Han as her favorite author, although she noted that it’s hard to pick a single writer as her favorite. Han is the author of Fox’s favorite book, The Summer I Turned Pretty. “I like the drama,” Fox explained. In addition to reading, Fox likes math – it’s her favorite subject in school – as well as tropical beaches like Hawaii, where she wants to travel someday, and gaming. She said, “I play Roblox a lot.” Fox enjoys playing with her pets, a dog and three cats, and she also plays piano, after using videos online to learn. “I’m pretty much self-taught,” she said. “I used YouTube to start figuring it out.” Fox used her stint as Kid Librarian to assemble a fall-themed display to appeal to kids of all ages.
Rowan Call is Harbin Memorial Library’s October pick for Kid Librarian. Call is 9 years old and in fifth grade. His display for the month is a good representation of his varied interests. He likes reading mysteries, science fiction and fantasy, such as the Guardians of Ga’Hoole series by his favorite author, Kathryn Lasky. He also really enjoys Tyler Whitesides’s The Wishmakers and The Wishbreaker. Call said he likes those books because of the action in them. “And how the main character and his friends help solve the problems that come up,” he added. Aside from his fiction reading, Call also enjoys true science. He hopes to be a caver when he grows up and explore some of the world’s most famous cave systems. He wants to visit the Hang Son Doong cave in Vietnam. “It is the largest cave in the world … large enough for a Boeing 747 to fly through,” he said. When he isn’t exploring underground, Call enjoys growing orchids and plans to start growing bonsai trees as well. Call is hoping to purchase a hermit crab in the future to have as a pet. He also wants to become a beekeeper.
Fox’s and Call’s displays will remain up through the end of this month, then will be removed to make space for November’s selections. Applications for the program will open again at the beginning of November and each following month for prospective Kid Librarians.
The Kid Librarian program is for children and teens in third through eighth grade. Applications are available at the front desk of each library branch.
