September 2024 Kid Librarians

Muhlenberg County Public Libraries is proud to announce September’s Kid Librarian selections: Charlie Ball and Autumn Welborn.

Kid Librarians are chosen monthly to design a juvenile display at the library. Each Kid Librarian may choose a theme (if desired), select library materials to highlight and decide how to organize and best show off the chosen titles. Two new Kid Librarians are selected each month, one at each library branch (Harbin Memorial and Central City).

Chosen Kid Librarians are acknowledged inside the library with a sign next to their display, as well as being recognized in the local newspapers and on the library’s website and social media accounts.

Central City’s Kid Librarian for September 2024 is Charlie Ball. He is 8 years old and is in fourth grade. Ball enjoys reading, especially science fiction, a preference reflected in the Star Wars theme he picked for his library display. His favorite author, however, is C.S. Lewis, and his favorite books are those in Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia series, because of the exciting adventure Lewis created. Ball also likes to travel and would love to visit another country – any other country, he said. His favorite school subject is languages, so that should help him prepare for his future travels. He plays piano, too, but he doesn’t enjoy practicing the instrument as much as he enjoys books and learning about languages.

Autumn Welborn is Harbin Memorial Library’s pick for Kid Librarian of the month. Welborn is 10 years old and in fifth grade. She finds fantasy stories interesting, like the ones written by her favorite author, J.K. Rowling. Welborn is a fan of Rowling’s Harry Potter series and hopes to someday visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park so she can make her own wand at Ollivander’s shop. She also appreciates learning about non-fiction topics, however. Math is her favorite subject, and she also likes social studies and history because she enjoys knowing what happened in the past. This interest in history is represented in the books she chose for her display at Harbin Memorial, which range from stories about the Aztec civilization of Mexico to the space race of the previous century. Welborn said that, in addition to books, she also likes movies because they allow you to see the action happening. In fact, she said Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone is her favorite book because it is different from the movie, so she can enjoy both.

Ball’s and Welborn’s displays will remain up through the end of this month then will be removed to make space for October’s selections. Applications for the program will open again at the beginning of October and each following month for prospective Kid Librarians.

The Kid Librarian program is for children and teens in third through eighth grade. Applications are available at the front desk of each library branch.

For more information about the Kid Librarian program, contact Muhlenberg County Public Libraries at 270-338-4760 or stop by to fill out an application at the beginning of each month.
