Muhlenberg County Public Libraries is proud to name Gavin Avery, Brendyn Sharp and Samuel Sharp as Kid Librarians for March 2026.
Kid Librarians are chosen monthly to design a juvenile display at the library. Each Kid Librarian may choose a theme for their display, select library materials to highlight and decide how to organize and best show off the chosen titles. New Kid Librarians are selected each month for each library branch (Harbin Memorial and Central City).
Chosen Kid Librarians are acknowledged inside the library with a sign next to their display, as well as being recognized in the local newspapers and on the library’s website and social media accounts.
Central City’s Kid Librarian for March is 9-year-old Gavin Avery. Avery, the oldest of five siblings, is in fourth grade. Avery enjoys social studies (especially history) as well as reading. Those interests collide in his favorite book, an illustrated edition about Daniel Boone. Avery said, “I enjoy reading about life on the frontier.” Avery said he can’t choose a single favorite author, but he does like illustrated classics, similar to his Daniel Boone book. His favorite genre, however, is mystery; his book display for the month includes both Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys titles. In addition to being a prolific reader, Avery is also a talented musician who can play the drums and sing. Avery’s future goal is to become a mechanic for large machinery, including semis, dump trucks and more.
The March 2026 Kid Librarians for Harbin Memorial are Brendyn and Samuel Sharp. Brendyn is 11 years old and in fifth grade, and Samuel, 15, is in eighth grade. Brendyn’s favorite author is his mother, Katie Sharp, but aside from her, he enjoys fantasy books. His favorite book is Invincible, because, he said, “I like the action in it.” In addition to the variety of books to borrow, he enjoys visiting the library because of the number of fun programs to participate in. Brendyn also likes studying science, and he has a talent for video and photo editing, which he hopes to eventually turn into a career as a photographer.
Samuel Sharp is also a big fan of reading, though he gravitates to dystopian novels. Fittingly, his favorite book is George Orwell’s classic, 1984. He also enjoys reading books by authors Stephen King and Maurice Sendak. In school, Samuel enjoys social studies. He hopes to work in a zoo when he grows up, specifically with marsupials, but he previously wanted to work in law with an ultimate goal of becoming Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Samuel also sings and plays saxophone.
Kid Librarian displays are available at their respective library branches each month. They are removed the following month to make space for the next set of chosen Kid Librarians.
New Kid Librarians are chosen for each library branch early each month.
The Kid Librarian program is designed for children and teens in third through eighth grade, though applications are accepted from all kids and teens in a similar age range. Applications are available at the front desk of each library branch.
