Kid Librarians – January 2025

Muhlenberg County Public Libraries is proud to announce the first Kid Librarians of 2025: Audrey Benton, Kylie Watson and Emily Watson.

Kid Librarians are chosen monthly to design a juvenile display at the library. Each Kid Librarian may choose a theme for their display, select library materials to highlight and decide how to organize and best show off the chosen titles. New Kid Librarians are selected each month for each library branch (Harbin Memorial and Central City).

Chosen Kid Librarians are acknowledged inside the library with a sign next to their display, as well as being recognized in the local newspapers and on the library’s website and social media accounts.

Audrey Benton is Central City’s Kid Librarian for January 2025. Benton, 12, is in seventh grade. An avid reader, her favorite school subject is English/Language Arts. She usually prefers graphic novels, especially those with an art style like that of Raina Telgemeier, or contemporary fiction featuring characters in her own age group. Her favorite author and book are J.K. Rowling’s The Prisoner of Azkaban, the third in the popular Harry Potter series, because, as she said, “It has a ton of action.” She also enjoys audiobooks in addition to the more traditional print format. Benton is interested in travel – she hopes to become a flight nurse in the future – and wants to travel to Tuscany, Italy, to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Her other hobbies include freehand crochet of stuffed animals, bags, scarves and more, and she is also on the swim team.

Harbin Memorial Library has a pair of Kid Librarians this month instead of just one: sisters Kylie and Emily Watson. Kylie is 10 years old and in fifth grade. She enjoys learning about science, and she reads both fiction and non-fiction. Like Audrey Benton, she enjoys reading books by Raina Telgemeier. Her favorite is Smile, which she enjoys because it’s based on a true story about the author’s life where the main character has to get braces after falling and injuring her teeth. Kylie has an interest in visiting Paris someday; she wants to see the Eiffel Tower and climb to the top. She would like to learn to speak French, too, which will help her on that trip. Kylie also takes pride in how far she can hit a softball and in her recent stint as Danny and a shepherd in the MCTI play “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.”

Emily Watson is a year younger than her sister Kylie, at 9 years old, and is in third grade. Although her favorite subject in school is math, she said she also loves to read. She especially enjoys non-fiction, as her older sister does, because she likes to read about things that are real. Her favorite book, Who Is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson?, is one such title. She said she enjoyed reading that book because, “It tells cool facts about Dwayne’s life.” Her favorite author, however, is Kate DiCamillo. Emily is interested in Disney and hopes to visit Disney World in Orlando, Fla. someday, since Kylie has been there but Emily has not. She also enjoys participating in gymnastics and is on a junior competition team.

The Watson sisters’ displays are featured at Harbin Memorial Library through the month of January 2025. Audrey Benton’s display is available at the Central City Library.

New Kid Librarians will be chosen for each library branch at the beginning of February 2025 and each subsequent month.

The Kid Librarian program is for children and teens in third through eighth grade. Applications are available at the front desk of each library branch.
