Kid Librarians – February 2025

Muhlenberg County Public Libraries is proud to announce February picks for Kid Librarian: Mirada Drake and Kenndon Durham.
Kid Librarians are chosen monthly to design a juvenile display at the library. Each Kid Librarian may choose a theme for their display, select library materials to highlight and decide how to organize and best show off the chosen titles. New Kid Librarians are selected each month for each library branch (Harbin Memorial and Central City).
Chosen Kid Librarians are acknowledged inside the library with a sign next to their display, as well as being recognized in the local newspapers and on the library’s website and social media accounts.
Harbin Memorial’s Kid Librarian for February 2025 is Mirada Drake. Drake is 10 years old and in fourth grade. Reading is a favorite hobby for her and her favorite subject in school. She especially likes mystery novels, because, she said, “They are interesting and you learn a lot from reading them.” Drake enjoys reading books that she can learn from; her favorite author is historical fiction novelist Alan Gratz. Her favorite book, however, A Dog’s Way Home, is by Bobbie Pyron. She said she enjoys that book because, even though the dog has a difficult journey in the beginning, there is a happy ending. When she isn’t reading, Drake likes drawing animals with sketch pencils and colored pencils. She also plays first and second base on the Mustangs league team, although she prefers first base. Drake hopes to someday travel to Hawaii and explore the volcanoes.
Kenndon Durham is Central City’s Kid Librarian for February 2025. Durham, 9, is in third grade. He said his favorite school subject is not really a subject at all, it’s recess. He does enjoy reading books, however, especially scary ones. His favorite author is R.L. Stine, author of the Goosebumps series. He particularly likes the Goosebumps books featuring Slappy the Dummy. Durham also likes Pete the Cat and the Llama Llama books. Durham, like Drake, enjoys athletic pursuits. He’s a particularly fast runner. “At 6 years old, everything would shake around me when I ran,” he said. Durham also likes exercising other muscles, especially facial muscles – “I can do an awesome trick with my eyes,” he said, in which he can cross his eyes not only normally but can also cross just one eye while keeping the other one straight. Durham hopes to travel more in the future, especially to the beach in Florida and to Washington, D.C. to visit the White House.
Drake’s display is featured at Harbin Memorial Library through the month of February 2025. Durham’s display is available at the Central City Library.
New Kid Librarians will be chosen for each library branch at the beginning of March 2025 and each subsequent month.
The Kid Librarian program is for children and teens in third through eighth grade. Applications are available at the front desk of each library branch.
