Muhlenberg County Public Libraries is proud to announce Kid Librarian selections for August 2024 are Destiny and Madelyn Alverson.
The Alversons are the inaugural picks for the new Kid Librarian program at MCPL.
Kid Librarians get to design a juvenile display at the library. They are allowed to choose a theme (if desired), select library materials to highlight and decide how to organize and best show off the chosen titles. A new Kid Librarian is selected each month.
Chosen Kid Librarians will also be recognized on the library’s website and social media accounts.
Destiny Alverson, one of this month’s picks, is 12 years old and in seventh grade. She said she loves reading; it’s one of her favorite hobbies. She particularly likes mysteries and author Judy Blume, but her favorite book is the Bible. She likes visiting the beach and wants to travel to Hawaii someday. Destiny also enjoys crocheting and plays the flute in the band at school.
Madelyn, an 11-year-old sixth grader, also said she likes the beach (although Florida is her pick), and Judy Blume is her favorite author, as well. She said she already likes all of her middle school teachers, but math is her favorite subject. Madelyn particularly enjoys graphic novels, but her favorite book is Wish by Barbara O’Connor. When she isn’t in school or designing book displays at the library, she likes participating in physical activities such as gymnastics and riding her bike.
The book displays designed by the Alversons are on view now. Destiny designed a display at Harbin Memorial Library in Greenville, and Madelyn put together the display at the Central City Library.
Their displays will be up for the rest of the month, then the process starts over. Applications will open again at the beginning of September and each following month for prospective Kid Librarians.
The Kid Librarian program is for children and teens in third through eighth grade. Applications are available at the front desk of each library branch.
