Join Muhlenberg County Public Libraries in welcoming Kentucky Chautauqua’s Janet Scott as she presents her show, “Mary Carson Breckinridge: The Frontier Nursing Service,” with a script written by Bo List!
Mary Carson Breckinridge, a member of the powerful Breckinridge family, established the Frontier Nursing Service in 1925 as a result of her own experiences with personal tragedy, combined with her desire to help others. As the first American trained nurse midwife, Breckinridge provided infant and maternal care in the mountains of eastern Kentucky. The Frontier Nursing Service aided more than 90,000 patients with 22,477 births. The Frontier Nursing Service is still used as a model throughout the world for rural healthcare services.
